The Aquatic Therapy Program at Appalachian Therapy Center is an important part of physical therapy and athletic injury rehabilitation.
Aquatics Therapy
Aquatic Therapy gives us an important tool to use with a variety of patients to hasten return to full activity. Whether it is returning to the job or returning to the team, Aquatic Therapy can be the key to speedy recovery.
The pool allows us to duplicate walking and running activities without the demands of weight bearing. This allows us to include those activities very early in the rehab process.
The natural buoyancy of the water also makes exercises easier on joints; yet, the viscosity of the water provides an excellent source of resistance. We also use exercise equipment to take advantage of the water: Kick boards, webbed gloves, water dumbbells, buoyancy vests, all designed specifically for rehabilitation programs in the water.
Our Aquatic Therapy program involves an individual physical therapy exercise plan to meet the need of each patient. One-on-one sessions are an integral component of everything that we do.
Who Can Benefit?
Appalachian Therapy Center’s Aquatic Therapy may be just the place for anyone that requires limited weight bearing, has the need for joint protection (such as with many types of arthritis), or need rehab with a heavy emphasis on total body conditioning.
Those that have had surgery, low back dysfunction, athletic injuries, and other conditions that require a less compressive or strenuous environment are good candidates for the pool. The Aquatic Therapy Program is used in conjunction with the patient’s outpatient rehab program to achieve goals of maximum functional improvement.
Appalachian Therapy Center’s Aquatic Physical Therapy Program is under the direction of Karen Woods, P.T. and Carolyn McAmis, P.T. and is located at Rheas Diving Service .
